The here and now... and what and why

Complacency is a trap. At least that’s what I was thinking when I up and left the comfort of a Yankee prep school gig, where I taught music, amongst other things, for 28 years. There was also that life long career as a composer, musician and artist.

First, it was a year in St. Thomas, USVI, working as a reporter and shooting photography and then, a year in San Agustin Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Time passed.
More time passed and a year back in the Athens of America followed by a hasty return to Oaxaca where it is all happening.
A couple of years in San Sebastian Etla and now, just down the road in San Pablo Etla. Life is good.

Virgin of Guadalupe in Teotitlan del Valle

What better way to celebrate the Virgin of Guadalupe day then at the final performance of the danzantes from Teotitlan del Valle.  They have been dancing as a group for three years, the normal full term for a group.  Under blues skies and clear late afternoon sun,  a poignant farewell from the entire village was bade to these outstanding dancers.  It is such an honor to be a dancer and it was such an honor for me to have watched a great number of their performances over the three years.  Teotitlan is all about honor, respect and traditions and the afternoon was resplendent in showing how it is done.  It was a wonderful and powerful experience.
I'll follow this shortly with a more complete  description and the accompanying feelings, but for now some images of the Virgin worn by the dancers.
 Each one quite different.
And all done by the dancer and his family.
 Note the 12-12-12 embroidery.
