The here and now... and what and why

Complacency is a trap. At least that’s what I was thinking when I up and left the comfort of a Yankee prep school gig, where I taught music, amongst other things, for 28 years. There was also that life long career as a composer, musician and artist.

First, it was a year in St. Thomas, USVI, working as a reporter and shooting photography and then, a year in San Agustin Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Time passed.
More time passed and a year back in the Athens of America followed by a hasty return to Oaxaca where it is all happening.
A couple of years in San Sebastian Etla and now, just down the road in San Pablo Etla. Life is good.

A tree grows in Brooklyn?

The title refers to things you never expect to find and yesterday I had such an experience.
A good Reuben sandwich in Oaxaca!  And I mean really good... with excellent potato salad and a perfect sour dill pickle.  Who woulda thunk it?  I should add that I know my Reubens pretty well after living in NYC and various other places which pride themselves with their versions.

Chomp, chomp.

You can find this sandwich along with lots of other taste treats at the Gourmand Delicatessen.  Here's the menu and one of the happy owners. 
The deli has been open for eight months.  How could I have missed this place on my never-ending quest for the best tortas and sandwiches in town?  Back for more soon.  And they had bagels, too.  In Oaxaca?  That's crazy.  Crazy good.
