The here and now... and what and why

Complacency is a trap. At least that’s what I was thinking when I up and left the comfort of a Yankee prep school gig, where I taught music, amongst other things, for 28 years. There was also that life long career as a composer, musician and artist.

First, it was a year in St. Thomas, USVI, working as a reporter and shooting photography and then, a year in San Agustin Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Time passed.
More time passed and a year back in the Athens of America followed by a hasty return to Oaxaca where it is all happening.
A couple of years in San Sebastian Etla and now, just down the road in San Pablo Etla. Life is good.

Up in the air at the Textile Museum

The other exhibition at the San Pablo complex is in the Textile Museum and is simply spectacular, a must see if you are in the area.  The show runs until April.  Here is a translation of the blub from the museum website.
The exhibition "Transcomunalidad: interventions and partnerships with communities of artisans and stilt walkers," was inaugurated at the textile Museum of Oaxaca (MTO), it shows the work of Laura Anderson Barbata, multidisciplinary artist who, over 10 years, has worked with traditional stilt walkers from the West Indies and Mexico. Laura fuses dynamics of contemporary art and participation with members of communities and craftsmen.
The show includes photography, video, carvings, incredible clothing and stilts, stilts, stilts.  It brought to mind the Moko Jumbies I saw in the Caribbean, but with a uniquely Mexican flavor.
From the wixaria region in Jalisco
Cotton outfit and bag from Jalisco
 Bailarina Oaxaqueña
Stilts by Jesus Sosa of San Martin Tilcajete
Life and Death on the stilts.
 El Señor de Aztlan
Queen Nyame from Trinidad, I think.
One of the best exhibitions I have been blessed to see in years.  Don't miss it.
