The here and now... and what and why

Complacency is a trap. At least that’s what I was thinking when I up and left the comfort of a Yankee prep school gig, where I taught music, amongst other things, for 28 years. There was also that life long career as a composer, musician and artist.

First, it was a year in St. Thomas, USVI, working as a reporter and shooting photography and then, a year in San Agustin Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Time passed.
More time passed and a year back in the Athens of America followed by a hasty return to Oaxaca where it is all happening.
A couple of years in San Sebastian Etla and now, just down the road in San Pablo Etla. Life is good.

It's a mess.....

Think about this.  Imagine if most of the teachers in the entire country went on strike just at the beginning of the school year.  There are lots of threads there and the newspapers are full of stories about how the strike is messing with people's lives.  School uniforms, restaurants, transportation, not to mention the kids not getting an education or parents having to deal with children at home when they should be in school.

Just up the street from me in Trinidad de Viguera, the parents are demanding the teachers return or else they will close the school.

In Huajuapam, the economy is taking a major hit.

Tim Johnson from McClatchey has a good post about the action in Mexico City.

And there is this from Al Jazeera:

So Chris
What is happening in Oaxaca City?
Are the teachers in the Zocalo?
Hope it doesn.t turn violent! The economy can't absorb another blast of negative publicity
We were commenting how the teachers didn't strike this May....little did we know they had bigger plans!

I can't believe these striking Oaxaca teachers are receiving full salary... PLUS a bonus is delivered to them in Mexico City.
¡Ya basta!

The city seems quiet. I guess most everyone is in the DF. The is action in the villages and I will post about that shortly.
You are right about that bonus, anon. I just read about it.... and the salaries, too. What a deal!
