The here and now... and what and why

Complacency is a trap. At least that’s what I was thinking when I up and left the comfort of a Yankee prep school gig, where I taught music, amongst other things, for 28 years. There was also that life long career as a composer, musician and artist.

First, it was a year in St. Thomas, USVI, working as a reporter and shooting photography and then, a year in San Agustin Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Time passed.
More time passed and a year back in the Athens of America followed by a hasty return to Oaxaca where it is all happening.
A couple of years in San Sebastian Etla and now, just down the road in San Pablo Etla. Life is good.

Fresh from the tree

Naranjas, higos y aguacates.
Even though it has been very dry, which is normal, I still have a good crop of oranges, figs and avocados. The oranges are so bitter and tart they give the lips a permanent pucker. The avocados are small with a large pit, with a slight anise taste and edible skin. Nice. Nothing like picking fruit and eating it immediately. I always feel like I am ingesting months of sun and growth, lots of energy. If you have never eaten a freshly picked fig, you are missing something. Yes, Fig Newtons (from Newton, MA) are related, but there is a reason Hesse used the image in Siddhartha:
"Your mouth is like a freshly cut fig, Kamala. My lips are also red and fresh, and will fit yours well, you will. see."
