Are you kidding me? I guess not. A bit different from my usual hoops setup.
Ay! I want to go back to Oaxaca! The here and now... and what and why
First, it was a year in St. Thomas, USVI, working as a reporter and shooting photography and then, a year in San Agustin Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Time passed.
More time passed and a year back in the Athens of America followed by a hasty return to Oaxaca where it is all happening.
A couple of years in San Sebastian Etla and now, just down the road in San Pablo Etla. Life is good.

Hair! - Where?
After close to eight months of isolating, I was psyched to finally get a haircut yesterday. However, my rare trip into the city left me at a loss.... and I mean a real loss. My usual peluquero, a Oaxacan institution, had been closed for months. I had checked the last time I was in, but at least there was a phone number to call. Now, his place is still closed and it has a feeling of finality.
My other barbero, a backup, was Sir Pepe, who I saw all the time and spoke with regularly. He ribbed me the last time saying, "It's time, don't you think?"
I agreed and said I would be back if the other was still closed. Well, by the time I returned, a few weeks later.... he was gone, too. I know it may sound strange, but some of my fondest memories of Oaxaca are getting my haircut by a master and listening to classic vocal trios from the early days. Often, not a word was spoken. It was sublime.
And, he made my day when he said he had seen the blog posts about him. I hope they are both well and enjoying life. I miss them both.

Masks done right!
There, it is Labor Day and the beaches and bars appear to be packed with people not wearing masks. Here. it is just another day of labor and everyone, for the most part, is masked. However, it is always permissible to remove your mask to enjoy some mezcal.

Markets in the time of covid....
There is hand sanitizer at the two entrances. I always go mid mornings and visit my normal vendors. I am in and out quickly. I also avoid Wednesdays and Sundays when it is busier, but it is easy to see why I go.

Sweet spot
One of the activities I miss most, besides playing pool in the city, is shooting hoops. I've had a great setup in MA for forever, and I shoot everyday.... but here.... there's no place to put one. And to further drive me crazy, there are two groups of young guys that play nearby everyday and the sounds of the game make me long for it all the more. Well, as we all know, there are always courts or canchas in every Mexican neighborhood or village. So today, I was determined to find one nearby and it turned out, there was a wonderful village sports center within walking distance, really close but just on a street I had never gone down before. Que milagro! Perfecta! So I'm all set for now, a new daily activity. And the sound of the bouncing ball!! The place echoes like crazy. It's wild. I'll have to make a recording.

Meet a real movie star...
And it's more than just a pretty face. Yes, this little church, Las Peñitas, was one of the starring backdrops for the film "Nacho Libre." However, the surrounding countryside in Reyes, Etla is equally dramatic, with mountains to the west...
