The here and now... and what and why

Complacency is a trap. At least that’s what I was thinking when I up and left the comfort of a Yankee prep school gig, where I taught music, amongst other things, for 28 years. There was also that life long career as a composer, musician and artist.

First, it was a year in St. Thomas, USVI, working as a reporter and shooting photography and then, a year in San Agustin Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Time passed.
More time passed and a year back in the Athens of America followed by a hasty return to Oaxaca where it is all happening.
A couple of years in San Sebastian Etla and now, just down the road in San Pablo Etla. Life is good.

Is old is new again? - Teotitlan del Valle

For the convite, the procession of unmarried women and girls in Teotitlan del Valle Friday, a group of young women wore a different style of traditional wear.

There was some discussion as to whether or not this was the style from an earlier time or something new.
We saw it last year in one of the guelaguetza  declamation contests on a woman representing the village.
I have not heard the definitive word, but I'm sure I will.
Of course, there were many in the current traditional traje, like our favorite, Beatrice Ruiz, featured on this blog many times.
More in a bit.

Your photo's demonstrate the trust and faith the people, young and old, of Teotitlan have in you.
Bev and I know you will bring the Guelaguetza to us as we watch from Connecticut.

The natural color wools worked together are very elegant. I have a tapeta in those colors in the traditional fish pattern, Reminds me of Picasso.

Hi Chris,

Do you happen to know the date for the Reyes Etla/Etla Guelaguetza at the Reyes Etla church? Gracias in advance 😀

I believe (and I am hoping) that it begins at 10 AM, as it has in the past.

Reyes is the first Monday, always, and Etla the second.
