The here and now... and what and why

Complacency is a trap. At least that’s what I was thinking when I up and left the comfort of a Yankee prep school gig, where I taught music, amongst other things, for 28 years. There was also that life long career as a composer, musician and artist.

First, it was a year in St. Thomas, USVI, working as a reporter and shooting photography and then, a year in San Agustin Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Time passed.
More time passed and a year back in the Athens of America followed by a hasty return to Oaxaca where it is all happening.
A couple of years in San Sebastian Etla and now, just down the road in San Pablo Etla. Life is good.

Things that make you go hmmmmm......

Hmmmmm... what a long strange trip.
One would think that a trip to Pinotepa Nacional would be stranger than a visit to Boston, but not this time.  As I bounce between San Sebastian Etla and Newton, MA, each time the places seem more disparate.  I guess I am more used to life there than here.  What used to be exotic is the new normal and what used to be normal seems alien now.  I am used to seeing people like this.
Here, the population is so much more diverse.  In Oaxaca, one gets used to seeing indigenous faces and features, like most everyone has black hair and brown skin.  Here?  It's a rainbow.  Hmmmmmm.
The one thing that I have really noticed this time, last time it was the difference in cars, is how almost everyone has a smart phone, a Kindle or a Nook.  I have been taking the train to get around which is always fun and interesting.  Maybe I am out of it, well, maybe there is no maybe about it, I am out of it, but texting seems to have taken over.  I have never seen people type so fast using only their thumbs.  Damn, I'm piano player and I don't think my thumbs could ever do it, go that fast.  Maybe I need guitarist's fingernails or something, but I just don't think my thumbs work that way.  At any rate, everyone seems technologically connected and almost addicted to it.  I am too, but I don't have a cell in either country and still have not figured out how best to use my ipad in comparison to my macbook air.  I guess I am just getting old.  As my father-in-law used to say, "I used to be a Greek god, but now I'm just a Greek."
