So I would stop and try to help and there would be some human interaction. Well, those days are gone. Everyone, and I mean everyone, has a cell. I have one, I mean three, too. But I still can't text with my thumbs nearly as fast as I see the kids do. Kids meaning anyone under sixty. And Oaxaca is changing. Lots more people, cars and notoriety. I know it is happening in many places around the world and I also know I am part of that change. I'm one of the old gringos that has brought change just by being here. Although living like a monk, I try not to rile the waters too much.

So, I'll return to the dream with the words of Korean Master SungChol, “I’m just a mountain recluse who really doesn’t know a thing. I spend my days looking at the eternally infinite blue sky and staring at the dancing white clouds. So don’t be fooled by anything I say.”

Christopher Stowenshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17338834673351573616noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1710073417412924020.post-19880510091784175192023-11-10T17:38:00.003-06:002023-11-10T17:38:53.624-06:00Oaxaca:Boston Streets and markets
Just some shots from walking around the two cities. It is a poblano filled with shredded meat, fruits and spices and topped off with a walnut cream sauce and the pomegranate. Its creation has some wonderful stories behind it. It was first served by nuns in Puebla to Emperor Irturbide, in celebration of Mexico's independence from Spain One story has it that the winds miraculously blew the unusual ingredients together for a nun, Angelica. And rumor has it that she and some of her sisters had been stationed in Spain and the Middle East where all of these ingredients were a part of the cuisine.

Anyway, it is a wonderful dish and this years version from La Casa del Tío Güero, right next to SAT, was exceptional! Yesterday, on the last Monday of the month, I went up the foothills to nearby Trinidad de Viguera. My local fruit vendor said there was a guelaguetza there on the cancha or basketball court and what a beautiful event it turned out to be.

My fruit lady immediately saw me and gave me a big hug, so I was cool as the only gringo for kms.. The first thing I noticed was how many young people were there, dressed up and ready to dance. First, came the howling winds which were so strong they toppled trees. Then came very heavy rains blown by those winds. Then came the hail, granizo. It was deafening and I worried, because it was being blown sideways, that it would break the windows. It didn't, but it actually took the paint off the facing walls, like they were sandblasted, as you can see in the photo. And the poor plants and trees.... shredded, with tiny pieces fo leaves covering the ground. There was a similar storm on the other side of the city two days ago in Teotitlan and Tlacolula. They had even more hail and serious flooding. Strange to have such powerful storms two days in a row.

Christopher Stowenshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17338834673351573616noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1710073417412924020.post-82840095702481781342023-04-07T07:44:00.003-06:002023-04-07T07:44:20.140-06:00Palm Sunday - Domingo de Ramos 4/2/2023
