The here and now... and what and why

Complacency is a trap. At least that’s what I was thinking when I up and left the comfort of a Yankee prep school gig, where I taught music, amongst other things, for 28 years. There was also that life long career as a composer, musician and artist.

First, it was a year in St. Thomas, USVI, working as a reporter and shooting photography and then, a year in San Agustin Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Time passed.
More time passed and a year back in the Athens of America followed by a hasty return to Oaxaca where it is all happening.
A couple of years in San Sebastian Etla and now, just down the road in San Pablo Etla. Life is good.

Is this the answer?

Being here in Boston, for the time being, I notice the things I don't notice.
When in Oaxaca, I see men with big guns and body armor all the time.  Lots of stores and businesses have armed guards.  Here, not so much.  In fact, not at all, but I am sure they are there somewhere.  As the gun debate rages on here in El Norte, I wonder if this is what people want, an armed person at every door?  I don't think guns are as prevalent in Oaxaca and there is certainly no Mexican version of the NRA of which I am aware.  Of course, there are all the tens of thousands of deaths from the drug wars, thankfully, not in Oaxaca, but are more guns the answer?  Different countries, different mindsets.  Mexico is militarized and the public is used to it.  Maybe that will be what happens here.

Like your blog. Do you know what is up with Amate Books? The web site is down and Henry hasn't responded to emails.
I notice you mention San Agustin Etla, so I thought you might know.

You are not the first to ask me about Henry and Amate. I'll see what I can find out.
