The here and now... and what and why

Complacency is a trap. At least that’s what I was thinking when I up and left the comfort of a Yankee prep school gig, where I taught music, amongst other things, for 28 years. There was also that life long career as a composer, musician and artist.

First, it was a year in St. Thomas, USVI, working as a reporter and shooting photography and then, a year in San Agustin Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Time passed.
More time passed and a year back in the Athens of America followed by a hasty return to Oaxaca where it is all happening.
A couple of years in San Sebastian Etla and now, just down the road in San Pablo Etla. Life is good.

Another day, another protest

Yesterday, while on our way to the Oaxacan Garden Club meeting in Teotitlan del Valle, we ran into a blockade causing traffic to come to a standstill.  Well, I did not actually run into it, because I saw it in the distance. stopped the car, threw it into reverse, backed up and took off on the ubiquitous dirt side road that everyone else was using.  This is just normal driving here.  There are blockades and there are ways around the blockades.... most of the time.  If you look at a map you can see there are very few major roads in and out of the city, really only three, so blocking them is a pretty effective statement.  In fact, depending on where they are placed, they can shut the system down.  So it is either turn around or wait for hours.... or find the seemingly always present dirt road around the mess.  No problema.

What were they protesting?  The re-installment of four dismissed workers and better working conditions at the Pemex plant.  Here is the full story and a photo from El Impacial.
