The here and now... and what and why

Complacency is a trap. At least that’s what I was thinking when I up and left the comfort of a Yankee prep school gig, where I taught music, amongst other things, for 28 years. There was also that life long career as a composer, musician and artist.

First, it was a year in St. Thomas, USVI, working as a reporter and shooting photography and then, a year in San Agustin Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Time passed.
More time passed and a year back in the Athens of America followed by a hasty return to Oaxaca where it is all happening.
A couple of years in San Sebastian Etla and now, just down the road in San Pablo Etla. Life is good.

Feria de Carrizo - San Juan Guelavia

Today was the last day of the the Feria de Carrizo in San Juan Guelavia.  The feria ran for two weeks and it was spectacular, a really good time.  Carrizo is a bamboo like grass that grows almost everywhere and I mean everywhere.
It is one tough plant and people make many different things from it from fences to baskets to cradles to lamps and much more.
San Juan Guelavia is the right just before the left one takes to get to Teotitlan del Valle.  Some of the baskets were classically beautiful and the covered bottles will make good gifts at some point.  Here's what I purchased, some nice medallions to go under plates for all my dinner parties.... yeah, right.
The air was filled with tempting aromas as there were lots of food stalls, but really the highlight for me was this absolutely kick-ass band.
That's right Las Reinas Oaxaqueñas and they totally ruled!
Even engraved in the tuba's bell.  The woman could really play and you know how much I love the tubas down here.  She was so good.
Really the entire group was great, all fifteen of them.  Here is Eva Martinez, it is her band.
Having way too much fun.  The large crowd was loving it.
But by far, the star of the show for me was this drummer, who was as good as they come, throwing in some great kicks and fills.
Such a good time.  More in a bit.
