The here and now... and what and why

Complacency is a trap. At least that’s what I was thinking when I up and left the comfort of a Yankee prep school gig, where I taught music, amongst other things, for 28 years. There was also that life long career as a composer, musician and artist.

First, it was a year in St. Thomas, USVI, working as a reporter and shooting photography and then, a year in San Agustin Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Time passed.
More time passed and a year back in the Athens of America followed by a hasty return to Oaxaca where it is all happening.
A couple of years in San Sebastian Etla and now, just down the road in San Pablo Etla. Life is good.

How was your day?

One of the things that always resonates powerfully with me, is that life is so real here, more visceral, tougher.  I realize that life is real everywhere, but here it is in your face a bit more than in other places.  Existence can be very tough here. It is hard on people, animals and plants.  That's life.  You get the point.  However, there is such a resolution to survive that it makes for a paradoxical balance.  I watch plants grow through concrete-like soil with no water.  I watch the feral dogs move in packs and think about their pampered brothers and sisters elsewhere.  And I watch the people, who are incredibly hard-working and resilient.  In general, I would say almost everyone is warm, friendly and happy.  I know that may seem like a cliche, but hey, the sun is shining, why not?
People just keep on keepin' on.  Kids have responsibilities and start work early in life and old people keep working until they die.  Retirement is not an option for most.  So you can imagine some of my thoughts as I watched this abuelo slowly make his way across a plaza.
Slowly...
moving
across
the plaza.  He had seeds and large spoons to sell.

How was your day?  Oh, by the way, the Words for the Day are "respect" and "appreciation."

Great post! I still don't think that life in the USA are not easier in any way than life in Oaxaca. It does seems that people have more, but the lack of real supporting community, health,happiness... are devastating . At age 90, I will be, for sure, happier sitting in the market selling craft than sitting lonely in front of the big flat TV. Same about the pampered dogs that are crying for hours behind closed door, waiting for their humans.
