The here and now... and what and why

Complacency is a trap. At least that’s what I was thinking when I up and left the comfort of a Yankee prep school gig, where I taught music, amongst other things, for 28 years. There was also that life long career as a composer, musician and artist.

First, it was a year in St. Thomas, USVI, working as a reporter and shooting photography and then, a year in San Agustin Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Time passed.
More time passed and a year back in the Athens of America followed by a hasty return to Oaxaca where it is all happening.
A couple of years in San Sebastian Etla and now, just down the road in San Pablo Etla. Life is good.

It's all in the details... Teotitlan del Valle

Well, really, the details are only a small part of the whole wonderful celebration that is the danza de la pluma in Teotitlan del Valle.  At the beginning of this, their third and final year, all of the dancers were decked out in beautiful new outfits.  Here's Juan Pablo Gonzalez Gutierrez, the owner of the above paddle, representative of a shield, which is easily one of the most beautiful and unique.
The other side of the paddle with a totally different color scheme and weaving insert.  Just remarkable work!
Quetzali del Rayo Santiago Ruiz, La Malinche, was dressed in another exquisite outfit.
The pavos reales, peacocks, are just beautiful.
And on the skirt.... all remarkable and all works of art!  For more info and details, check out Casa Colibri's post.
And the big news!!! This group of dancers has been invited to perform in the 2018 Guelaguetza on Monday morning, July 23, in the official auditorium, watched by thousands in person and millions on TV and online around the world.  Felicidades!
