The here and now... and what and why

Complacency is a trap. At least that’s what I was thinking when I up and left the comfort of a Yankee prep school gig, where I taught music, amongst other things, for 28 years. There was also that life long career as a composer, musician and artist.

First, it was a year in St. Thomas, USVI, working as a reporter and shooting photography and then, a year in San Agustin Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Time passed.
More time passed and a year back in the Athens of America followed by a hasty return to Oaxaca where it is all happening.
A couple of years in San Sebastian Etla and now, just down the road in San Pablo Etla. Life is good.

On a downward spiral....

It is hard to know exactly what is happening being so far away in Boston, but things certainly appear to be descending into further chaos.  The election is on Sunday and things should quiet down after that... we all hope. For now, there is no gasoline to be had.  Imagine how you would deal if all of a sudden, it was almost impossible to get around.  Lots of people are pushing their cars, waiting in line, for ....  (All photos from Noticias) Here's the story.  Really a fascinating mess.
There have been no deliveries and there are blockades at the Pemex plants.
Meanwhile the teachers of Seccion XXII continue to pretty much run amok, vandalizing the PRI offices, all seemingly without repercussions. (Noticias story)
I believe the airport is open today, but roads are either very quiet or a total mess.  I head back Thursday and I expect that things will have quieted down by then.  Until then, I expect things to escalate...... and not in a good way.

This is happening all across southern Mexico, but Oaxaca is the most dynamic.  Nationally, there is much political action as reported by this story from the LAHT.

Ugh! Found your blog while researching for our trip to Oaxaca. Our plans are to arrive on June 11th. Hopefully things calm down. To think I was worried about the occupied Zocalo. This is much worse.

We just returned to the States today after a week in Oaxaca. Airport was open and very secure this morning. The only day the airport was affected was Wed. Gas coming in from outside Oaxaca so gas shortage improving.
