The here and now... and what and why

Complacency is a trap. At least that’s what I was thinking when I up and left the comfort of a Yankee prep school gig, where I taught music, amongst other things, for 28 years. There was also that life long career as a composer, musician and artist.

First, it was a year in St. Thomas, USVI, working as a reporter and shooting photography and then, a year in San Agustin Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Time passed.
More time passed and a year back in the Athens of America followed by a hasty return to Oaxaca where it is all happening.
A couple of years in San Sebastian Etla and now, just down the road in San Pablo Etla. Life is good.

All the news?

The morning coffee, reading the newspapers online, one cannot help but be struck by how filtered the US media is.  Three women win the Nobel Peace prize but no mention in my old town rag, the Boston Globe.  The OccupyWallStreet protests, which is a huge international story with many references to it being the equivalent of the recent "Arab Spring"... no mention of the hundreds of protest actions across the country... no mention at all.

Here and elsewhere, there has been notice paid to the situation resulting from Alabama's draconian new immigration law.  Students have stopped going to school out of fear and crops are rotting in the fields.  This is progress?

Ah well, I guess all I am saying is get your news from as many sources as possible while at the same time remembering that they, the media, are all part of the problem.
