The here and now... and what and why

Complacency is a trap. At least that’s what I was thinking when I up and left the comfort of a Yankee prep school gig, where I taught music, amongst other things, for 28 years. There was also that life long career as a composer, musician and artist.

First, it was a year in St. Thomas, USVI, working as a reporter and shooting photography and then, a year in San Agustin Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Time passed.
More time passed and a year back in the Athens of America followed by a hasty return to Oaxaca where it is all happening.
A couple of years in San Sebastian Etla and now, just down the road in San Pablo Etla. Life is good.

Teotitlan del Valle - Danza de las Plumas - Dance of the Conquistadors

The thing about the fiesta in Teotitlan del Valle is that it is just so visually rich that one can shoot hundreds of shots and still not get it all.  So of course, I shoot hundreds of shots and then have to go through them all and glean a few gems.

Well, there are just too many damn gems, so deal with these for now.

These outfits have so many details, some of them so small as to not be noticed.  I will post something later that focuses on them.

The leggings are amazing this year.

Think of the work that goes into this outfits!

Beautiful woven capes returned.

Some appeared to be silk screened or painted.

Feathered headdresses caught the wind and made dancing even more strenuous.

Doña Marina

and Malinche are two aspects of the same person and are represented by Leticia Martinez Gonzalez and Rosa Angelica Hernandez Mendez.

Stop being so cute!

These are beautiful. And so are the people.

Do you have any photos of the corn used for this fiesta? I believe they use the red corn and I would love to see preparations with it.

Forgot to ask--are the bands on the leggings woven from wool, like the rugs?

I have not seen the red corn, but come to think of it, maybe I did as i got s couple of tamales from a woman by the church.

As for the leggings, there are some that are woven, but others look like they might have been sewn.
