For the first time in 82 years, the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca has a governor who doesn’t belong to the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, which held power at the national level for seven decades.
Gabino Cue Monteagudo, who won July’s election as the standard-bearer of a four-party coalition, took the oath of office Wednesday in Oaxaca city....
In his inaugural address, Cue vowed to bring to justice “all those who have violated human rights or disregarded the law.”
He also stressed the need to avoid further school shutdowns by attending to the problems of Oaxaca’s poorly paid teachers, who fought many battles against the Ruiz administration.
The here and now... and what and why
Complacency is a trap. At least that’s what I was thinking when I up and left the comfort of a Yankee prep school gig, where I taught music, amongst other things, for 28 years. There was also that life long career as a composer, musician and artist.
First, it was a year in St. Thomas, USVI, working as a reporter and shooting photography and then, a year in San Agustin Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Time passed.
More time passed and a year back in the Athens of America followed by a hasty return to Oaxaca where it is all happening.
A couple of years in San Sebastian Etla and now, just down the road in San Pablo Etla. Life is good.

I have high hopes for Cue. He has his work cut out for him.
