One of Oaxaca's most famous composers, Alvaro Carillo, is being featured on a new series of lottery tickets. He is one of my favorites, too. I love playing "Pinotepa Nacional," his homage to the coastal area, from which he came. One hears his music constantly here, even though you might not know it. It is played by street musicians, in jazz clubs, rock venues, over store's sounds systems, in posh restaurants and in dives. It is everywhere. And he has a statue that I walk by regularly. It is always so nice to see a composer honored.
This is an attempt by the powers that be to get more people to learn about Carillo. The lottery ticket features his most famous song, "Sabor a mi," which has been recorded by hundreds of performers.
Here he is playing and singing a medley.
Just doing a quick search on the Tubes came up with so many versions, but check this one out from Bogota, Colombia with the band "Monsieur Perine."
